Calvin Beam was born in Philadelphia and received his bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He survived a 30-plus year newspaper career with his sense of humor intact, although the same cannot be said for his retirement account. He lives in Chattanooga, Tenn., where the pace of Southern life suits him just fine.
